NC News Digest posts a weekly roundup of governmental and political news, with headlines, brief summaries and clarifications, and links to articles with further coverage. It’s typically published early every Friday morning.

Although NC News Digest covers all the week’s top statewide political news and NC-relevant national news, it emphasizes news that’s relevant for folks living in western NC.

It’s written by myself, Tricia Shapiro, a longtime writer and editor who previously published the WNC Weekly News email. I live on a remote mountain homestead in western NC.

Occasionally, I also post firsthand reporting of relevant events, such as pro-democracy public demonstrations.

Sad to say, news providers that most of us have relied on in the past are failing us now, in this urgent moment for our country. To inform our understanding and decision-making, we now need to cobble together our own relevant and reliably truthful information ecosystems—and that means we need to change how we pay for our news.

To the extent you can afford it, PLEASE financially support the publications that you now rely on for news. If you haven’t done that lately, please do so TODAY by paying for a subscription to NC News Digest or to any of the other publications you rely on.

Paid subscribers to NC News Digest make it possible for all posts to be freely available to anyone, with no paywall—mainly by enabling me to buy subscriptions to many of the publications linked to in my weekly roundups.

Thanks for your support for honest reporting in our confusing world.

All of NC News Digest, including its archive, is FREE to access, with no paywall. When you subscribe, each new post will be sent directly to your email inbox. I’ll never share your email with anyone else, and you can unsubscribe at any time.

Please note that Substack won’t allow pay-what-you-choose donations, only subscriptions. Feel free to sign up for a paid subscription for as little as one month, then cancel and sign up for a free subscription. Pay as often or as little as you choose. Thanks for your support.
